Alisa Mengel

Alisa Mengel

Fluent in Russian

Alisa is also an early childhood educator and has been an active member of Ithaca community for 20 years. While teaching English as a new language in Russia, Alisa met her soon to be husband, the International Church volunteer, and moved to Ithaca, NY. Alisa began to volunteer at local children and youth programs, including the Boy Scouts of America, Sciencenter, Kiwanis, Cornell University and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. As a parent and early childhood specialist, Alisa understood that Ithaca with its gorgeous state parks, stunning waterfalls and breath taking Cayuga lake views is an environmentally healthy place to raise their son.

The home schooling of their child for the first five years gave Alisa a priceless opportunity to work with diverse families in the community as well as to find in herself unique passion of helping children with disabilities. Either as an interpreter or a child care provider, Alisa played an important role at children's individual plan evaluations and classroom program experiences.

Ultimately, the desire to help more families took Alisa on the path to master's degree in the special education. With the gpa in the higher honor roll, she successfully graduated from Touro College in 2013. Up to now, to many elementary school students in the area, Alisa is known as Ms. Mengel, the Ithaca City School District substitute teacher.
